Trick (What You See vs What You Know) is a project aimed to highlight trans bodies and the idea that they are “tricking” others into believing they are a different gender. A lot of people take offence when someone states they are trans and say “oh but I’m not gay” even though the person was still originally attracted to them. Suddenly the trans person is no longer the gender they identify as and are seen as gross and manipulative for “tricking” the person they are going out with. Whenever a trans person goes out with somebody they run the risk of getting assaulted or worse after they state that they are indeed trans. They experience a greater risk of physical violence compared to the average person based on this stigma. People get defensive and when a trans person comes out they feel threatened and scared of their attraction to the trans person. This relates back to the theme of what we see versus what we know because on the outside, society sees trans people as the gender they identify as but as soon as someone finds out about their transness the perception shifts. I chose to use grayscale for these images because within society there is a sort of “grey area” when it comes to being with a trans person. There is a very fine line between personal preference and transphobia/violence. With this in mind, I wanted the images to feel gentle, helpless, and intimate to simulate a sexual relationship (even though none of the images are inherently sexual) since that is when most people begin to have issues with transgender bodies.
